PROVIDER OVERVIEW · OFFICIAL-SOURCE RESEARCH

Is DigitalOcean a good VPS choice?

DigitalOcean is a practical shortlist option for developers and businesses that want Linux virtual machines alongside cloud services and documented tooling. Choose it when you can operate your own server, or budget for someone who can. A Droplet purchase does not replace application administration.

This overview uses public pricing and official documentation. We have not purchased or benchmarked these plans. Recommendations below are editorial judgments about fit, not measured performance rankings.

Current pricing and sample plans

These are Basic Regular bundled Droplets, quoted in USD per month. Taxes and additional services are excluded. Other CPU families and newer billing variants have different prices; compare the exact product before ordering.

DigitalOcean Basic Regular bundled plans
MemoryvCPUSSDTransferMonthly cap
1 GiB1 shared25 GiB1,000 GiB$6
2 GiB1 shared50 GiB2,000 GiB$12
4 GiB2 shared80 GiB4,000 GiB$24

The 1 GiB tier is a cost reference, not our blanket recommendation for a production store or automation stack. GiB is a binary memory/storage unit; a vCPU is a virtual processor. Shared vCPU counts do not guarantee continuously available physical CPU performance.

Plans and features

Basic Droplets use shared CPU. General Purpose, CPU-Optimized, Memory-Optimized and Storage-Optimized families address different resource needs. Premium options use newer hardware and NVMe storage. Cloud Firewalls, APIs and command-line tooling help manage infrastructure; databases, load balancers and extra storage require a separate cost check.

Use shared CPU for workloads that can tolerate variability. For sustained processing, inspect a dedicated CPU family and validate it with your own workload. More RAM will not automatically solve a slow external API or inefficient database query.

Locations

Official availability includes US regions and locations such as London, Toronto, Sydney and Frankfurt. Availability varies by plan. Choose a region close to your users and dependent services, then confirm the exact combination in the current availability table. We have no measured latency comparison.

Backups and the complete bill

Percentage-based weekly backups add 20% of Droplet cost; daily backups add 30%. Usage-based backup options also exist. On the $24 reference plan, those percentages produce $28.80 or $31.20 for compute plus that backup option, before taxes and other services.

Decide what you must restore: the operating system, application database, uploaded files and configuration. Keep application-aware copies and rehearse recovery. A paid backup feature is useful only when its scope and restore process cover your deployment. Add storage, transfer overages and administration to the cost calculator.

Security and support

Infrastructure controls are only part of the security boundary. Assign responsibility for SSH access, OS updates, application updates, secrets, monitoring and incident response before launch. Review DigitalOcean’s current support plans rather than assuming an application administrator or guaranteed response is included.

Who it suits

  • Developers: a documented cloud ecosystem and reproducible deployments matter more than the lowest headline price.
  • Small business applications: you have an operator and a recovery plan.
  • n8n: you can run and maintain the required Compose stack; choose resources for its actual components. Read our n8n shortlist.

Pros and limitations

Reasons to shortlist

  • Multiple compute families for different workloads.
  • Cloud services and documented management tooling.
  • Locations relevant to US, UK, Canadian and Australian audiences.

Trade-offs

  • You still need server and application administration.
  • Backups and adjacent services increase the bill.
  • Shared CPU is not a sustained-performance guarantee.

Alternatives

Consider Hetzner Cloud for an available regional plan with a suitable total cost. Use our comparison to separate regions and resource classes. If you cannot operate infrastructure, compare a managed application service before buying either VPS.

FAQ

Does DigitalOcean manage my WordPress site?

A Droplet is infrastructure. Determine who maintains WordPress, plugins, the database and the server; do not infer that from a deployment image.

Is the cheapest Droplet enough?

Only workload evidence can answer that. List the running components, test realistic concurrency and leave recovery and upgrade headroom.
